Lorely Burt, Liberal Democrat spokeswoman for business, enterprise and regulatory reform has asked, in a parliament speech, that the Will Writing industry be regulated. Here, here, we say at LSUK.
She said that there were a number of bogus companies operating in this business.
The majority of will writing businesses in the UK were associated to either The Society of Will Writers or The Institute of Professional Willwriters. It’s not their members that pose the problems, but those operating outside of this spectrum.
Ms Burt, MP for Solihull, told a debate at Westminster Hall that there were a number of ethical businesses in the industry, but fraudsters had taken advantage of a lack of statutory regulation.
“It is no exaggeration to say that will-writing has become a happy hunting-ground for the incompetent, dishonest and the fly-by-night operator,” she said.
The rules were different for financial advisers and solicitors, leading to widely varying standards in the industry, she claimed.
Lorely should know what she’s talking about . She used to be a Will Writing instruction taker for a quality company that doesn’t operate with any derogative behavior. Lorely herself was an expert in the business and always completed her tasks with the most professional respectability. I should know; I was involved with her training.
The Citizens’ Advice Bureaux around the country often hear of stories where people had seen advertisements for a will at around £20-25, sometime plus VAT and sometimes not. The so called ‘consultants’ from these companies would then try to ‘force’ people into buying legal documents costing several hundred pounds. This is extremely misleading and would never be part of LSUK’s practice. LSUK always recommend the right legal framework correct for the client and all clients know exactly what the fees will be before any work is started or fees exchanging hands.
LSUK ensure that only professional trained people represent them as consultants. These people are constantly tested, appraised and updated in legal training and law changes. We doubt if any Will Writing company in the UK has better trained people.
You can always go to the MP’s own website and ask her direct which companies she’s referring to (in the negative) and which she regards as acceptable.
