Many councils are looking to raise home care fees by more than 100%, although this increase doesn’t apply to all councils.
The fees are for washing and dressing types of services which allow people to live in their own homes rather than go into a nursing home.
Half a million people currently receive council care at home and often it’s the only personal contact some people have.
It is a suspicion that some councils would rather older people go into nursing homes as if they’re home owners, their home can be sold to pay the bill. Ask any person who has to sell their home to pay their nursing home bills and they’ll almost certainly tell you they want to Will their home to their family; not effectively give it to their local council.
The sooner you talk to your LSUK consultant to see what your options are and how you may be able to avoid losing your home to this council ‘tax’ the better the advice can be.
You’ll be okay if you’re over 80 and live on the Isle of Wight – they’ve ended home care fees for the over 80’s!
