Civil partnership numbers fall

Local Government Association figures show that gay and lesbian marriages are down some 55%, but that’s not surprising is it? Some of those people waited ten years or more to get married legally, so it’s obvious that the rush to get married in the first few months of the new law would bring more people to the alter and then the numbers would fall off to a steady level. That’s just pure logic.

There has now been two full years (since December 2005) completed since the laws changed to allow same sex couples to marry legally, with a full legal wedding ceremony. They also attract the same legal rights as mixed sex couples.

Brighton holds the record for arranging the most gay and lesbian weddings. That shouldn’t have been difficult to have guessed either.

Reporting from The Office for National Statistics between the beginning of December 2005 and the end of December 2006 a total of 18,059 civil partnership ceremonies took place in the UK. They claim that Wandsworth in south London, was typical in that 231 same sex couples married until the end of 2006 whereas 100 gay people married during 2007.

There are no real statistics collected on the number of gay/lesbian divorces yet, because, under law, a couple has to be together for more than a year before they can divorce, so only divorces from December 2006 count so far. Time will tell if figures are similar to mixed sex couples.

LSUK are perfectly pleased to talk through and give guidance to all types of couples, be they male & female, gay or lesbian. These are the people that have the law behind them now, but still a large number of people live together and are unmarried; their legal standings are shocking compared to the married couples. It’s about time the law supported all couples.
