The number of people in the UK over pensionable age, taking account of the change in the women’s retirement age, is projected to increase from 11.2 million in 2007 to 11.9 million in 2011, and will rise to 13.1 million by 2021.

In the year 2000, in the 65-74 age group, 19% of men and 37% of women lived alone, and 33% of men and 60% of women aged 75 and over lived alone.
